Wartime construction accelerated the adoption of existing wood construction techniques but contributed little that was basically new. Important recent areas of progress have been the compilation and dissemination of existing information, the use of stress-graded lumber, and the increased use of timber connectors, glued-laminated beams and arches, timber-concrete decks, and plywood sheathing. Major problems remaining include inadequate stress-grading procedures for members used in framed structures and for common grades of lumber, deficient design procedures for nails and other fastenings, the inadequate use of low-grade and short-length lumber and of wood waste, and the need for improvement of glues, finishes, and treatments against fire, decay, and shrinkage.
