The history of the North American lumber industry is one of evolution and migration to new regions in search of timber. But sudden changes in the availability of softwood timber in the West and limitations on softwood timber production in the South and Canada are now fostering a revolution in the production and marketing of hardwood products in the East. There will be an acceleration in the market acceptance of technically suitable hardwood products in traditional softwood markets. Intensified competition for high quality hardwood timber will lead to the production of new products able to use lower grades of timber. Their production methods could result in major changes in the hardwood lumber grading system. Traditional distribution methods could also be disrupted. Yellow-poplar structural lumber and hardwood laminated veneer lumber are presented as examples.
