Prospective U.S. Wood Use Situation

Lower expected population growth, smaller anticipated economic growth, new timber products, and shifting resources will change future wood use patterns. New Forest Service studies conclude that wood products consumption during the next 50 years will more than double in the United States. Most of the increase will be for pulp products. Products made from hardwood timber will be more common. Housing construction and maintenance will account for much of the lumber, plywood, and panel production. Part of the anticipated growth in demand is expected to be met by imports. Exports of wood products and logs are not projected to change significantly. Use of waste paper for products and fuel and wood fuel comsumption is projected to increase. By 2030, timber demands on U.S. forests may reach 25 billion cubic feet.
