Treating millwork with a water repellent made from paraffin wax, resin, and solvent was found to provide excellent protection against outdoor weathering during 20 years of exposure. Both painted and unpainted test samples were intact and free from decay. The water-repellent treatment provided as much protection for millwork as did a commercial water-repellent preservative. Thus, the results showed that preservatives such as pentachlorophenol are not needed to protect millwork from decay above ground in northern climate exposure if wood is protected by a water repellent.
