Using the toluene extraction method of determining the retention of creosote-coal tar in wood, it was possible to provide southern pine piling consistently averaging in excess of 20 lbs./cu.ft. retention. However, the method does not allow determination of retention in individual pieces so that entire charges must be retreated if below specified average retention. Using moisture content at the time of treatment to measure void volume, it was estimated that at 60 percent M.C. a retention of 22 lbs./cu.ft. could be achieved by filling only 88 percent of the void volume.
