Statistical quality control applied to lumber and veneer drying was shown to be a very efficient guide to quality. By setting upper limits on the moisture content of veneer, assignable causes of variation could be made. Lumber proved to be more difficult from the detection standpoint, but suitable methods based on adequate sampling and realistic control limits proved successful. Control charts were effective in preventing lumber of excessive moisture content from being processed and served as an effective method of measuring dry-kiln performance.
