Ionizing radiation-initiated grafting of styrene in wood was accomplished. Retentions of up to 90 percent and antishrink efficiencies of up to 70 percent were obtained with an aqueous dioxane-styrene solution. Electron irradiation of specimens impregnated with an aqueous styrene-dioxane solution was found to give the highest stabilization for a given amount of retained polymer. The effect of polystyrene stabilization of such properties as tensile strength and abrasion resistance is small. Liquid water sorption is materially retarded.
