By organizing and simplifying the routine of plant hot testing of particleboard for internal bond (IB) and density variations, it is possible to reduce the response time between sample removal from the line and data evaluation, when compared to methods most frequently used in industry today. This paper describes the method that has been used by several manufacturers to provide rapid quality assurance data and data from other plant experiments. A sample preparation jig which quickly and accurately sizes the test pieces and thin metal tabs that cool rapidly provide the means for a rapid test response. Other pieces of equipment aid in cooling and cleaning of the IB blocks and all parts of the method are easily fabricated in the normal plant maintenance shop.
