Recent Developments in Masking Overlays

Production of Douglas-fir plywood surfaced with overlays is increasing steadily as ways are being sought to upgrade and extend existing supplies of wood veneer. Overlay production has been limited by the necessity for hot presses, for grade “B” stock under the overlay, and for aluminum cauls. The Forest Products Laboratory has obtained good test results with paper plastic overlays of the low-density type. Crown Zellerbach Corporation has developed a low density masking overlay for use on defective plywood veneer, made with a new beater-addition phenolic resin. The beater-addition resins are deposited uniformly throughout the sheet in a form that gives a high degree of water resistance. The overlaid sheet can produce a smooth, paintable surface, or can be subjected to a post-forming embossing process to give a variety of decorative effects.
