In the gulf states area, fungus free lumber should be used. In addition, construction, practices including 1) good roof overhang or at least eaves and gutters, 2) the placing of trim over the siding ends when using drop siding, 3) designs to prevent runoff from striking siding or splashing up against siding from porches, etc., and 4) the use of breathing papers or no paper directly under the siding, should be followed. Treating with 5 percent pentachlorophenol or copper naphthenate (0.5 percent metallic copper) will protect pine sapwood as follows: 1) brush application or a few second dip–3 or 4 years; 2) 3-minute dip–5 or more years; and 3) 15-minute soak or longer–10 or more years.
