The New England Kiln Drying Association is now 23 years old and enjoys a membership of 300 individuals and about 75 supporting firms. A continual feature of the, bi-annual meetings is the “Problem Clinic” wherein members exchange drying information without hesitation or thought that it may be a “trade secret.” The Association promotes drying technology by offering a $500 scholarship to a person attending a 2- or 4-year wood technology program in the Northeast; by offering incentive awards to industrial people; and by sponsoring or cooperating with others in putting on workshops, clinics, and short courses. Current problems involve the use of eastern white pine for furniture and its attendant difficulties in drying because of water Pockets and brown staining. The NEKDA also has developed a moisture content specification form for use by purchasing agents and others (a copy of the form is included in the article). The Association plans to continue to work with the universities, Forest Service, and industry in promoting good drying practices.
