Keeping dry-kiln operators continually informed on demonstrated good seasoning practices in the primary aim of wood seasoning associations. In an effort to accomplish this mission, which necessitates maintaining member interest, the Wisconsin-Michigan Wood Seasoning Association has initiated several new ideas. The importance of a properly functioning dry kiln is emphasized through periodic meetings devoted particularly to kiln operation and maintenance. Annually, eligible member companies are awarded invoice stickers in recognition of their active participation in the organization. Each member company is provided with a multi-colored, artistically-designed emblem mounted on a wood plague which can be displayed on the wall. These latter two schemes help stimulate interest and pride in the organization as well as promote and advertise it. Area drying problems of primary concern are collapse associated with wet streaks in the zone between the heartwood and sapwood of aspen and discoloration of maple sapwood. Recommended drying procedures to overcome these problems are described.
