Moduli of rupture (MOR) and elasticity (MOE), both flatwise (MOEF) and edgewise (MOEN), of 256 yellow-poplar 2 by 4’s containing knots were determined. MOR, MOE, specific gravity based on green volume (SG), and rings per inch of matching small clear specimens were also measured. MOR and MOE of small clear specimens were significantly correlated with each other and with SG but not with rings per inch. MOEN and MOEF were significantly correlated with each other and with MOE and SG of matching small clear specimens. MOEN was not as well predicted by MOEF as has been reported for several softwood species. MOR of 2 by 4’s was not significantly correlated with any clear wood property, either individually or in combination. It was significantly correlated with MOEN, but the fraction of explained variation was small (r2=0.10).
