Ratio of flake length to thickness is a better indicator of flake board properties than is either dimension independently. Increases in resin spread increase bending strength only moderately. Stiffness is not materially influenced by resin spread. Thickness springback increases as flake thickness is increased, particularly in the region above 0.012 inch. The use of longer flakes has no effect upon linear springback. From the practical standpoint of improving board properties without incurring additional cost, increasing the flake length appears most promising, although handling and forming problems would undoubtedly develop.
