Relative Strength of Boards Made from Bark of Several Species

A series of particleboards was made from nine species of eastern tree barks to gain information on the relative strength of bark boards compared to a laboratory produced aspen flakeboard. The results indicate that these bark boards should be overlayed if strength in bending is a primary consideration. Values in block shear indicate that overlaid boards of reasonable strength are feasible. The elimination of fines from the bark produces a better board and a more saleable mulch, bedding, or potting material. The tests were made on black locust, green oak, white pine, oak and locust, aspen, hybrid poplar, red oak, and mixed oak.
