Probabilistic methods provide a rational and consistent way to balance the competing demands of safety and economy. They are universal in that they apply to all materials and all facets of design. This paper is an introduction to the concepts of probabilistic design for wood users and producers. Second moment safety analysis is illustrated in detail by an example application to the design of wood floor joists. Necessary background information is provided. The distinction between second moment analysis and limit states design is noted.
