Removal of Emulsified Oil By Sorption on Southern Pine Bark

Emulsified oil, such as that used in metal-cutting operations, has been removed from an aqueous medium by sorption on southern pine bark. The procedure employed involves agitating the emulsion with a mixture of dried bark and a demulsifier such as sodium chloride or calcium chloride amounting to 2 percent of the emulsion. The sorption capacity of bark varies with initial moisture content, particle size, and exposure time, and can be as high as two to three times its own weight. Results indicate that the sorption is determined by surface area as well as bulk penetration. Below about 200 percent sorption on gram-oil gram-sorbent basis, oil removal is complete with no detectable oil remaining in the treated effluent. Calcium chloride proved to be more effective than sodium chloride in reducing the concentration of emulsifier in the effluent, as determined by the methylene-blue standard procedure of APHA.
