Recommendations of a Special Advisory Committee of the Building Research Advisory Board on protection against decay and termites in residential construction were reported. Protection measures vary according to the type of construction: slab on ground, crawl-space, or basement houses. There are also differences in treatment required for different regions of the country. For purposes of the report the nation is divided into three regions. It was reported that to prevent subterranean termite attack where there is a known hazard, all wood must be protected by either physical or chemical barriers. In addition, when such barriers are employed as the sole means of protection, all substructure areas between earth and wood must be open to inspection. It was also concluded that, wherever there is danger of exposing wood to prolonged or continuous wetting, either through direct moisture contact or condensation, such wood must be preservatively treated or be of a durable species in accordance with the severity of the decay hazard.
