The author discusses general research needs for various wood products. It is pointed out that there is a need for a cheap preservative for paper that is a good biological protectant yet relatively non-toxic to man. With regard to fence posts, research is needed on treatability and utility of little-used species of wood as sources of fence posts. Research on methods of obtaining adequate distribution of preservatives without excessive bleeding is advocated for poles. In the area of crossties, research on seasoning, tie coating material and treatment to reduce mechanical wear are suggested. With regard to lumber and millwork, research on finish systems, handling techniques, and better preservatives and composition board, research on the addition of preservatives during processing is advocated. In the general area of wood preservation, the author suggests the need for development of better test methods to demonstrate performance and improved inspection methods. Furthermore, it is proposed that an effort to summarize and make available information on wood preservation research, research organizations, and recommended treating practices is needed.
