Failure to most profitably utilize residues may well determine the success or failure of a sawmilling enterprise. Many factors will influence the total percentage of residue that can be disposed of at a profit, so management must make a thorough study of potential markets and set up a definite program. Slabs and edgings are chipped and shipped to a pulp mill. Bark is composted and sold for horticultural, farm, and home use. Sawdust is sold to fruit packing plants and other specialized uses. Planer shavings are used for poultry bedding.
