The dielectric properties of wood are important not only for understanding the structure of wood and cellulose at the molecular level, but also for practical application in industrial heating, and in measuring density and moisture content of cellulosic materials. This review indicates that our understanding of the dielectric breakdown of wood and cellulose is still limited; for example, information at sub-audio frequencies and very high frequencies is nonexistent. Subjects covered here include effect of wood density and ash content, effect of grain orientation and fiber length, effect of moisture content, effect of temperature, dielectric polarization and relaxation, and static dielectric constant and dielectric constant at infinite frequency.
