Ripping short stock with a hand-feed saw or a power feed rip saw of the old-fashioned type is a dangerous operation. In such cases the operator should cultivate the practice of standing well to the left-hand side. Then if by any chance a piece of material is kicked back, he will be out of the way. Modern straight-edging, rip saws are particularly safe in reference to ripping short material. In addition many machines are equipped with a set of narrow steel fingers that prevent any slivers which may be cut off the stock from being thrown back toward the operator. Material as short as 7-1/2 inches is handled under two rolls at all times, and material as short as 13 inches is handled under three rolls.
