Rolling Shear Properties of Southern Pine Plywood and Undirectionally Laminated Veneer

Rolling shear stresses and deformations develop in certain structural members made either entirely or partially from structural plywood. Such structures may be box-beams, I-beams, gusset plates, and stressed-skin panels. Although knowledge of rolling shear modulus is required for designing structural members with plywood, no quantitative information is available for this property of southern pine plywood. This paper presents experimentally obtained information of rolling shear moduli and strength of three-ply, four-ply, and five-ply southern pine plywood of commercial quality and also fabricated from selected veneers (free of visible defects) tested in the dry and wet conditions. In addition, experimental values of true rolling shear modulus, GTR, and strength of Select and D grade unidirectionally laminated southern pine veneers tested dry and wet. Experimental results are also presented of shear modulus parallel to grain, GLR, of unidirectionally laminated veneers of southern pine, tested dry and wet. Finally, the experimentally obtained values of rolling shear moduli of five constructions and two qualities of southern pine plywood were predicted accurately with a theory developed and published by the authors previously.
