The already short supply of commercially usable logs can be extended through more efficient utilization. One method is rotary knife-cutting lumber-like material up to 1/2 inch in thickness. The feasibility of this method has been demonstrated by both laboratory and industrial trials. The material produced, although checked, was usable for material-handling pallet and box parts and as lamina for beams. One group of 103 bolts produced an average yield of 68 percent. Cutting is, preferably, done on a heavy duty veneer lathe. Spinout can be minimized by using retractable chucks. Practical process suggestions include selecting logs with sound center, cutting bolt ends square, debarking prior to peeling, heating bolts, using secondary bevel on knife, closing bar as soon as possible, using settings of 10 to 20 percent compression and 0.050- to 0.60-inch lead and operating the lathe at low r/min.
