Blanking or the pre-planing of lumber before it is finish-planed, is done by a special planer which thicknesses boards twice–first from the back, then the face. The machine is described and compared with conventional surfacers. The advantages of this planer are: 1) Pre-surfaced lumber may be sorted and trimmed to yield maximum utility. 2) The planer will not make thin boards thinner and cause thinness degrade. 3) Any skip on the face of the blanked lumber will tell the grader which pieces are too thin to dress out in the final finishing operation. 4) The planer enables the mill to saw closer to the line and thus to increase the yield from a log.
