Preparation of rectangular longitudinal samples from round material requires firm restraint to prevent movement while in the saw and to maintain accuracy of cut. Once flat surfaces at right angles have been generated, further reduction can be accomplished using the saw tables and fence as a guide. A jig was developed to saw bolts up to 30 inches long with a conventional 20-inch bandsaw. The jig is an end-dogging device fabricated of readily available wood and metal shapes and designed to run in the cutoff guage groove in the saw table for accurate alignment. Approximately 350 white birch bolts were sawn into rough planks for preparation of standard physical testing samples.
