Sawing Pattern Effect on Warp Loss of Hard Maple Dimension Stock

The effect of live and around sawing on yield losses due to warp in 1-inch hard maple (Aces saccharum Marsh.) lumber was evaluated. The log sample consisted of low-line grade 2 logs. The study provides considerable evidence that there is no significant difference between live and around sawing in terms of dimension stock losses due to warp. The yield of final usable cuttings from live-sawn logs is at least equal to that obtained from around-sawn logs. The magnitude of the warp losses ranged from 18 to 34 percent with the boards sawn from the center of the log showing the highest losses.
