Data from noise surveys conducted in California sawmills and planermills in 1971 and 1972 indicate that more than 90 percent of the work stations are at noise levels in excess of the OSHA limits. Noise survey data can be used effectively to plan control measures if noise levels are determined for different operating conditions at the same worker location. The differences between these noise levels can indicate whether the machine under consideration, other sources, or both are important. They also can indicate whether quieting the machine or protection of the man is the most logical solution. Further measurements made during nonoperating hours can assist in quieting of machine subsystems. Use of these techniques with data from an example mill is discussed.
