Scientific Timber Quality Evaluation–A Lumber Industry ”Must”

This is a report on the scientific analysis of quality of timber stands and the logs they can produce. The objectives are to determine the probable occurrence of avoidable losses and miscalculations that lower potential values and also to institute measures to reduce such losses. The basic tool needed is a modern log-grading system. Recent studies of white pine indicate that for one group of trees (the poorest quality) the average value per thousand board feet of lumber was $90.00, whereas for the highest quality group it was $180.00. So the pattern of log grades must be determined if accurate per-thousand appraisal of timber is to be made. Through the practical application of log and tree grades, timber owners are aided in making decisions as to which trees should be left for future quality growth, and which logs and trees are marginal. Also, log grades benefit the sawmill in that logs can be accurately sorted for the most profitable markets and for the cheapest conversion methods.
