Four drying systems were investigated for effectiveness in eliminating resin exudation from red pine lumber: azeotropic drying with trichloroethylene, conventional and high-temperature kiln schedules, and a modified high- temperature schedule incorporating intermittent steaming and extended conditioning. Accelerated weathering tests of painted specimens, each containing a sound knot, showed elimination of resin exudation in material dried by either modified high-temperature or azeotropic drying. Analysis of terpene and resin content in knots before and after drying by these two methods showed a terpene reduction of more than 60 percent. Average reduction for high-temperature and conventional kiln drying were 40 percent and 12 percent respectively. Although the modified high-temperature schedule required 49 hours, including conditioning, it is considered more practical than azeotropic drying which required 19 hours.
