Second-Growth Douglas-Fir Lumber

Presently, one-third of the Douglas-fir lumber produced is from second growth timber and this trend is expected to increase. Logs cut from stands up to 100 years old produced 65 percent No. 1 common or better lumber. No clear lumber was produced, however. Recommended cultural practices to produce clear lumber included 1) partial cuttings in well-stocked stands on good sites and carry over of the best crop trees for rotation years greater than 100 years, 2) artificial pruning of selected trees, and 3) improvement of new stand quality through better seed source selection. These practices should become increasingly important as the supply of old-growth timber decreases.
