Segregating Bark Fractions Electrically

The purpose of this paper is to describe a new technique for segregating Douglas-fir bark into fiber and cork fractions. When bark particles are placed on a condenser plate, the fiberous or spindle shaped particles are oriented in the electric field and accelerate from the condenser plate. Increasing the field intensity or the moisture content of the particles increases the number of particles segregated, but reduces the discrimination between fiber and cork. The technique can be adapted to commercial equipment used by the metallurgical and seed crop industries. The technique may also be used to segregate wood from bark.
