Separation of Wood and Bark By Gyratory Screening

Bark from fir and pine which had been peeled mechanically, air-dried, and hammer-milled was screened on two different shakers with a horizontal swirling action. In every case and for every particle size the material separated into layers comprising a mat of lone intertwined inner bark fibers and wood slivers lying atop a bed of small round or flaky, scales of outer bark. The contiguous mat of bark fibers/wood splinters could be easily lifted or skimmed off. Analyses and holocellulose estimations demonstrated a manifold enrichment of fiber in the top layer. This method provides a way of isolating fiber-rich fractions from bark and leaving a splinter-free residue of rhitidome particles. Both fractions can be used to advantage in bark utilization schemes.
