Shifts in Southern wood products exports: 1980 to 1988

The United States has experienced strong growth in lumber and softwood plywood exports during the 1980s. The value of hardwood and softwood lumber products exports grew 179 and 46 percent, respectively, from 1980 through 1988. Softwood plywood export value grew 139 percent for the same period. Shift-share analysis indicates that southern wood products exports shared in the general U.S. gains in export markets. In particular, the South’s share of dressed and rough hardwood lumber, rough southern yellow pine lumber, and softwood plywoods gained in total U.S. wood products exports.
