Information is presented on the Weyerhaeuser timber companies Silvacel line of fibers that are used for molding other products. Descriptions include raw materials, process, products, and markets and uses. Also included are some of the steps that Weyerhaeuser took to get individual companies to use their product. Successful product engineering requires a plan of attack similar to the following: 1) analysis of use requirements, 2) probability of meeting requirements, 3) probable volume, 4) probable price level, and 5) decision on further development. If an established product will not meet the requirements but the answers to the other questions are favorable, then work is started to develop a whole-wood fiber which will “fill the bill” and a new Silvacel is born. After it has been found satisfactory for one particular usage, other uses nearly always are found for the new product.
