Silvicultural treatments prevent gypsy moth damage

The invasion of gypsy moth into U.S. forests is a continual process. Gypsy moth has invaded less than 25 percent of its potential habitat in the eastern United States. New forested areas undergo significant defoliation and mortality when the first gypsy moth outbreak occurs. Silvicultural treatments conducted before the gypsy moth arrives can prevent some of this damage by presalvaging mortality and by reducing the attractiveness of the stand to gypsy moth. Recent research results show that presalvage thinning treatments are effective in reducing the mortality that occurs from gypsy moth defoliation.
