A procedure for developing simplified equations for estimating best opening face (BOF) position was developed. These equations were based on analysis of results of a computer simulation of the sawing process. The analysis allowed identification of the basic geometric factors underlying the location of optimum saw-line placement. It was found that a centered solution, in which the exterior faces of the two outside boards were equidistant from log center, is an excellent predictor of BOF position.
