Simulating an extra grader in a sawmill

Managers often make decisions without knowing how the implementation of those decisions will affect a manufacturing system. Simulation can help when these types of decisions need to be made. Relatively inexpensive, with no risk of damage to the system, simulation is the preferred choice of analysis for many of today?s business decisions. Managers of a southern pine sawmill wished to know the effect of adding an extra grader to the day and swing shift in the planer mill. A simulation experiment was used to model the present system with two graders per shift and the proposed system with three graders per shift. The models projected an increase in volume and value and a third grader was assigned to both the day and swing shift.
