Six variations in the design of the leading-edge deck-boards of nailed, non-reversible, double-faced, flush, four-way, 48 inch by 40 inch, permanent warehouse pallets were tested for their influence on the rigidity, hence, service life of these pallets. The pallets, having three notched stringers and 16 to 19 deckboards, contained 29-1/9 bd.ft. of lumber, assembled with 114 pallet nails. The pallets with 1 by 6 leading-edge top and bottom deckboards performed best and those with 1 by 4 leading-edge top and bottom deckboards performed poorest, with the combinations of 1 by 6 and 1 by 4 leading-edge deckboards performing within the range established by the two extremes. All of the six pallet designs appear to provide more than adequate performance under most field conditions encountered.
