Slices 1-inch thick of red oak, Douglas-fir, and aspen were cut with four types of pressure bars. Cutting was done at 200?F. on a modified metal milling machine equipped with a 21? knife. The four types of bars used were a fixed bar with a 15? angle as used for conventional veneer, 15? conventional with restraint, 1-1/4-inch-diameter free-rolling, and 1-1/4-inch-diameter overdriven 10 percent. Based on depth of fractures and thickness uniformity, the conventional-with-restraint bar set at low compression and high restraint levels generally performed best. Knife and bar forces parallel and perpendicular to the cutting direction were measured.
