One of the most important characteristics in a board is the slope of grain. This feature of a wood member influences practically all of its physical and mechanical properties. Grain deviations in a piece of wood have a great influence on dimensional changes resulting from variations in moisture content. More information should be obtained on the relationships between slope of grain and other properties of wood, and this is a fertile field for both basic and applied research. The increasing importance a laminating as a method of developing new markets and improving utilization of lumber necessitates more intensive research on the influence that slope of grain in the individual laminations has on the total strength and stiffness of the whole member. Efficient methods of inspection of individual boards for slope of grain limitations merits considerable attention.
