Some Applications of Statistical Quality Control to the Drying of Lumber

Applications of statistical quality control techniques to the control of the final moisture content of kiln-dried lumber are described and illustrated. The Shewhart control chart is an essential tool in statistical quality control. By separating the quality variations which are due to assignable causes from those due to the operation of a stable system of chance causes, the chart indicates when corrective action may be taken to bring about improvement in product quality. An example is given of the construction of the Shewhart control chart for variables. Other statistical aids, such as frequency distribution curves, to the control of the drying process are discussed.
