Some Dynamic Characteristics of Band Saws

This is a theoretical analysis of the dependence of band saw tension and flexual natural frequencies upon the band axial velocity on the wheel and the pulley mounting systems which regulate tension. The flexural natural frequencies always decrease with increasing band velocity; the band can be considered less stable with increasing velocity. The condition of impending instability (zero fundamental frequency) always occurs at a specific critical velocity, which in turn depends upon the pulley mounting system, initial tension, band geometry, and material. Bounding approximate methods are used for efficient calculations. The band running tension and natural frequency depend directly upon the pulley mounting system. From the standpoint of dynamic theory the best mounting system for high speed band saws is the dead weight level mechanism. For low speed band saws the pulley mounting system is not so important. The band tension is dependent upon the axial velocity. The pulley mounting system determines whether the tension is constant or increases parabolically with axial velocity.
