A study was conducted on some of the physical characteristics of bark from plantation-grown (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii) and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) trees. The study showed that slash pine has thicker bark, a higher percentage of bark by weight, a lower bark moisture content, and a higher bark specific gravity than loblolly pine. Location differences within a species were found to be negligible for bark thickness and bark percentage by weight, but quite large for bark moisture content and bark specific gravity. Bark variation up the stem of the tree was also analyzed for the characteristics mentioned above. Results showed that slash and loblolly pine demonstrate similar trends for all characteristics studied except bark specific gravity.
