The article outlines the laboratory equipment required for testing wood finishing materials on a small scale. The author suggests testing for color, uniform viscosity, specific gravity (by means of a hydrometer or a Westphal balance), and solid content (by means of an accurate balance and a small oven). Comparison of the test material with a standard can determine uniformity of sheen and sanding quality of sealers. Other tests described determine qualities such as flow and levelling, adhesion, clarity, fullness of film, coverage, water and alcohol resistance, color, and stability in storage.
