Visually segregated samples of sapwood, light heartwood, medium heartwood, and heavy heartwood were analyzed with a G.E. recording spectrophotometer and a photovolt densitometer. Total reflectance and color data were statistically treated to determine correlation with drying rates under three sets of conditions. The densitometer is not useful because of the small sample area. Either visual or spectrophotometric segregation can be used to separate the sapwood from all heartwood; this form has the highest drying rate. Among the heartwoods, the light type dries as rapidly as sapwood; the heavy will require 4-5X drying time and the medium is intermediate. The heartwood types may be segregated by use of initial weight per unit volume plus reflectance; both methods can be automated. Production rates can be increased in all possible applications of the results; the degree of sophistication must be based on analysis of costs and returns.
