Specific Gravity At Various Positions Along the Stem of Planted Loblolly Pine Trees

In sample trees from 158 loblolly pine plantations, mean bole specific gravity decreased with increasing height to point of measurement and increased with increasing tree age. An equation has been developed to predict specific gravity at any height along the stem of planted loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) trees from tree age and percentage of total tree height. This information should assist multi-product mills in allocating parts of trees to optimum use where strength or fiber yield are critical.
