Spiral Grain in Trees–A Review

The salient literature on spiral grain in trees is reviewed. The occurrence of the phenomenon, its detection and measurement, growth patterns in conifers and hardwoods, probable causal factors, and methods of control are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the universal occurrence of spiral grain in trees and the importance of hereditary factors in controlling its development.
