SPSM is a simulation model of a large southern pine sawmill. Operational variables included in the combined network and discrete-event model are production rates, equipment, personnel, log quality, log costs, lumber grades, lumber prices, variable and fixed costs, and materials flaw. The user may enter data on log quality, log sizes, log prices, lumber prices, chip prices, etc., and the model will generate realistic predictions of production and profit. Operational variables such as materials flow, production rates, equipment, and personnel may, be changed by modification of the model. Such model changes allow relatively easy and inexpensive evaluation of proposed changes to the sawmill.
