A dark stain develops at sticker crossings in air-drying Alnus rubra Bong. lumber during the summer months. Five charges of rough green lumber were used to determine the effect of a steam treatment before air-drying. Preliminary steaming was successful when conditions were 140?F. dry bulb, 4?F. wet-bulb depression, and minimum steaming time about 18 hours. With no losses from sticker staining, the operator may take advantage of air-drying during the summer months and reduce total kiln time by 2-4 days.
